There’s nothing like the feel of a hand thrown mug for enjoying a morning cup of hot coffee or afternoon tea. This mug was thrown on a potter’s wheel in my Easthampton, Massachusetts studio. This handmade ceramic mug is intended for everyday use and is both microwave and dishwasher safe. The combination of the warm white stoneware with the vibrant surface design brings a simple, modern look that stands out in any kitchen cabinet. This mug holds approximately 8 fl oz.
Process: Each piece begins as white stoneware clay. First, the clay is thrown by hand on the potter’s wheel, forming the shape. A coil of clay is joined to the side, and methodically pulled to form a smooth, comfortable handle. Following a bisque firing in the kiln, the piece is hand-decorated using a combination of hand-drawn underglaze transfer and slip-painting. Then the piece is hand-dipped in a clear glaze and fired once more in the kiln to make the finished product.
Note: Minor imperfections, variations, and quirks are part of the unique, one-of-a-kind nature of using handmade items.
